Saturday June 28, 2008

The Inauguration Ceremony of the Sehat First Chashma Goth Center was held on Saturday June 28, 2008. Representatives from various public, private, non-governmental and community based organizations such as AKU Community Health Services, Pakistan Fisherfolk Forum, and Sahil Welfare Association, attended the Inauguration Ceremony. Mr. Aun Rahman, Country Director Acumen Fund Pakistan, and Ms. Naila Ismail, Corporate Affairs Manager, Unilever Pakistan, were also present at the occasion. A large number of community members, including men, women and children, also attended the Inauguration Ceremony.

Speaking at the occasion, Ms. Zahara Khan, COO-Sehat First, shared the details of the project and the Sehat First model. “There are only 74 physicians to every 100,000 patients in Pakistan and their distribution is not equitable. In this scenario, it is imperative to use emerging technologies to connect the healthcare providers in the far flung areas with the experts in the urban centers”, said Ms. Khan.

Mr. Mushtaq, the local community representative, urged the people of Chashma Village and surrounding areas to use the services offered by Sehat First centers in order to improve the health condition of their families.

Dr. Zafar Ejaz, District Officer Health (CDGK), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. Dr. Ejaz emphasized the role of private sector organizations in supporting the ongoing efforts of the government. Congratulating the local community on the inauguration of Sehat First center, Dr. Ejaz shared that “Sehat First center will be used as the base for implementing the awareness campaigns and programs launched by the dept of health”.

Dr. Abdul Jabbar Rajput, Deputy Town Health Officer (Bin Qasim Town), re-iterated the town health office’s support for the project. Speaking at the occasion, Dr. Amanullah Shaikh, DO Preventive Health (CDGK) announced the polio vaccination campaign to be implemented at the Sehat First Chashma Goth center in the month of July.

Addressing the audience, Dr. Shahida Saleem, Chairperson Sehat First, stressed the need of active participation from the local communities and the private sector organizations to help overcome the challenges related to the delivery of healthcare services in Pakistan. Appreciating the efforts of the local health team, Dr. Saleem remarked, “it is my firm belief that individual effort can make a difference in the lives of the people”.
